Yes, David and his cronies play at the Aubergine this Sunday, Mar. 30th. If you haven't heard his band in awhile, they've really become quite a tight modern jazz/swing ensemble. Mikan, the pianist, plays with virtuosic flourishes reminiscent of Oscar Peterson, and Brett, the drummer, rides the high-hat like an elder Jo Jones. So come check it out, since there really isn't a venue in SD where we have both the room and nice dance floor to fully appreciate dancing to this fine band. For more info, click HERE. Next week: Josh Collazo and his Feetwarmers! |

The TGO began as a fledgling garage band called "Aisle 56" in late 1999, started by trumpeter and vocalist Tim Gill at the tender age of 16. With the advent of the neo-swing movement, the band was transformed into the Tim Gill Orchestra, populated by professional players playing Tim's arrangements. Since debuting with the San Diego Symphony Pops Concerts in 2001, the TGO has been featured at many SoCal dance venues (including Neiman's) and continue to build upon their extensive repetoire of new arrangements of timeless classics. ***** DATE: Sunday, April 13th TIME: 8pm-midnight (FREE swing lesson at 7:15pm) PLACE: The Aubergine on 4th (corner of 4th and Island) COST: $8 General/$7 Swingazette Subscribers To subscribe to the Swingazette and receive the discount "password of the week," email meeshbop@yahoo.com. After playing at the Champion Ballroom to rave reviews, Swing Central is back to play for San Diego dancers at the Aubergine nightclub this Sunday, April 20th. Led by saxophonist Gerard Nolan, this jazz quartet plays a fun mixture of swing standards and romantic ballads geared for the modern Lindy Hopper. Doors at the Aubergine open at 7:00pm, FREE swing lesson at 7:15pm, Swing Central plays from 8:15pm-midnight on the largest hardwood dance floor in the Gaslamp (over 1,500 sq. ft.)! $8 General/$7 Swingazette Subscribers For more info and directions or to subscribe to the Swingazette, please visit the CafeSavoy.com webpage. ***** IMPORTANT: If you enjoy coming to the Stompin' at the Aubergine and appreciate having a weekly swing venue at a bar/nightclub where you can listen to and dance to LIVE JAZZ MUSIC, then please tell your friends or, better yet, bring your friends to the Aubergine. If every person who came to the Aubergine last night just brought one new friend this Sunday, the place would be hoppin' beyond belief. We will continue to advertise and market the venue like crazy, but, ultimately, the survival of Stompin' at the Aubergine depends on your positive and generous word-of-mouth. So please bring a friend and help us keep this unique LIVE MUSIC swing venue open. Thank you. |

There's good news and there's bad news. The bad news, we weren't able to book a band for this Sunday. The good news, we are instead bringing back to San Diego one of Cafe Savoy's most popular guest DJs, Mr. Tip West from LA's Swing Pit. When he last DJed at Cafe Savoy in January, he wowed the crowd of over 100 dancers with his fun music and his exhuberant energy. This Sunday at the Aubergine should be just as exciting and fun. REMEMBER: Doors now open at 7:30pm, free lesson at 7:45pm, Tip plays music from 8:30pm-11:30pm. There will also be a special Bal/Bal-Swing performance by our very own Joel and Alison at 9:30pm that you won't want to miss. $7 general/$6 if you ARRIVE BY 8:30PM! So be there early and invite a friend or two! Click HERE for directions and more specifics. |

You asked for 'em, so you got 'em! This Sunday, May 11th, we are happy to have one of Southern California's premier rockabilly swing bands, HOT ROD LINCOLN, play at the Aubergine. Remaining true to the retro-sound of 1950's rockabilly music, Hot Rod Lincoln has risen to the challenge of presenting roots music to a new generation of listeners. They play for rockabilly festivals all over the country and have also won the San Diego Music Award for best roots/rockabilly/swing band. $7 general/$6 if you arrive by 8:30pm. For less than what it costs to see "X-MEN 2", you can take a FREE introductory swing lesson at 7:45pm plus dance for 3 HOURS to HOT ROD LINCOLN from 8:30-11:30pm on the largest hardwood dance floor in any bar in SD county. | Site suggestions anybody?: Archives: STOMPIN AT THE AUBERGINE is cancelled just for this Sunday, May 18th! By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Monday, May 12, 2003 - 04:27 am: |
Yes, we're not having a swing dance at the Aubergine this Sunday due to last-minute private party. Blue Largo, who was scheduled to play this Sunday, will be moved to a later date. This last-minute cancellation saddens me because we had such a great turnout last night for Hot Rod Lincoln, and the momentum for Stompin' at the Aubergine seems to be building. But no worries, we will be back and better than ever starting with the first Sunday in June (Sunday, June 5th) with the Jazz Jury (Royal Crown Revue's side project, as featured on the movie soundtrack of Swingers), so stay tuned! |

Coincidentally, a job offer in Arizona materialized at the same time and "Hal's Angels" became a working trio. The trio expanded to a quintet with the addition of pianist Carl Sonny Leyland and bassist Mike Earls. The Angels play "Southwestern Swing"--Louis Armstrong to Count Basie; Joe Williams to Bob Wills. Anita, Katie and Sonny are featured vocalists. They sing up a storm! When Sonny plays boogie woogie and the blues, crowds always shout for "more!" We are happy to Hal's Angels make their San Diego debut right at our very own Aubergine nightclub this Sunday, June 15th! Besides freelancing, composing and arranging, Anita teaches reeds at the AFCDJS Adult Jazz Camp in San Diego. KATIE CAVERA (guitar, vocals, arranger) studied with Dr. David Baker at Indiana University and composed and arranged music for college dramatical productions "The Taming of the Shrew" and "Sweet Bird of Youth." Her band credits include: Jim Cullum's Jazz Band, New Orleans Wanderers, Golden Eagle Jazz Band, Firehouse Stompers, Clint Baker's New New Orleans Jazz Band, Bobby Gordon Sextet and the Jazz Chihuahuas. Katie also works with her husband (magician Woody Pittman) in a magic act and in short films. Katie teaches banjo and guitar at the AFCDJS Adult Jazz Camp. He moved to New Orleans in 1988 and worked with Ernie K-Doe, Chuck Carbo and others. Since relocating to Southern California, the versatile pianist/vocalist has worked with Gremoli, Bobby Gordon, George Probert, Roger Jamieson's New Orleanians, Chris Kelly's Black & White Jazz Band Big Sandy & the Flyright Boys (western swing) Blue Largo (blues). | SwingOrama News - Events, Workshops, Music More: LIVE MUSIC AT THE FIREHOUSE, CAFE SAVOY AUBERGINE THIS WEEKEND! By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Thursday, June 19, 2003 - 01:53 am: |
THURSDAY, JUN 19TH They were the surprise hit of the Pre-Lindy Prom Pajama Party last month, and they're back at the Firehouse this month to play even more mellow swingin' jazz/blues favorites. In case you were wondering, FAT-J stands for the Filipino American Tribute to Jazz, Pinoys dedicated to the Preservation of Jazz, and even Meeshi (a Filipino himself) will step in to sing a song or two or three...until you pay him to stop. If you like their sound, we hope to continue to have them play monthly at the Firehouse. Dennis Hong will DJ between the band sets. $7 general/$6 students. For more info, click HERE. FRIDAY, JUN 20TH This Friday, we are excited to have LIVE SWING MUSIC once again at Cafe Savoy with SD swing legends, The Rockin' Aces. Led by bassist, Tim Butler, The Aces were one of San Diego's premier rockabilly/swing bands a few years ago playing weekly at Tio Leo's and The Pourhouse (now Martini Ranch). They specialize in rarely played jump blues and early rock'n'roll of the early Fifties. Now, for the first time in almost 3 years, they have reunited to once again play for swing dancers in San Diego at our very own Cafe Savoy. $7 Cover. For more info, click HERE. SUNDAY, JUN 22ND This Sunday, we are featuring one of San Diego's favorite West Coast blues bands, Blue Largo. Blue Largo mostly plays hard swinging 1940's/'50's jump blues in the vein of Louis Jordan, T-Bone Walker, Johnny Otis, Julia Lee, Ruth Brown, and Dinah Washington. However, they can also pay sincere tribute to the likes of Billie Holiday or The Nat King Cole Trio with equal conviction. The band features Eric Lieberman on guitar, Alicia Aragon on vocals, Carl "Sonny" Leland on Piano, and Jonny Viau on saxophone. From BB King’s to Blind Melons and the Belly up, from Harvelle’s to the Blue Café, from the Tucson Blues Festival to the San Diego Blues Festival, this group of seasoned professionals has played nearly every major blues venue in the Southwest. | SwingOrama News - Events, Workshops, Music More: Get into the Aubergine for FREE this Sunday read on for conditions! Featured band: The Stilettos! By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Thursday, September 04, 2003 - 03:37 pm: |
![]() ![]() Despite the rumors, the Aubergine will be open this weekend. Yes, we know it is the weekend of Street Scene, but what better way to get more newbies into swing, then to have the Aubergine open while the Street Scene stragglers are looking for something to do after the concerts. To encourage you to come on down and brave the traffic, you'll be able to attend the Aubergine for FREE this Sunday if you can fulfill ONE of two requirements (printout of this post is mandatory): 1) GET INTO THE AUBERGINE FOR FREE if you can show Hazel your valid Street Scene ticket/weekend pass. Passes will be collected at the door (so that they can't be used twice to get others in for FREE). Several swing dancers are already planning to "make a day of it" by going to Street Scene on Sunday (2pm-8pm) and then heading to the Aubergine afterwards (entrance is only 1 block away). Big Time Operator and the KSDS All-Star Jazz Band are both scheduled to play at the Starbucks Jazz Lounge on Sunday, so you can swing dance all day and all night long if you wish. Jeremy and I will be doing the same! 2) GET INTO THE AUBERGINE FOR FREE if you and a NEWBIE (i.e. someone who has not swing danced before) attend the FREE beginning swing lesson before the dance. The lesson starts at 7:45pm, so both you and your NEWBIE friend need to arrive by 8pm to get in FREE. That's right, you and ONE NEWBIE GUEST get in FREE if you both take the lesson. Only ONE FREE GUEST per person please & you MUST bring a printout of this post. Well, we hope these incentives encourage you to come on down. Remember, even if you don't have a Street Scene Pass or bring a newbie, you can still get in for $5 before 9pm with a printout of this post. Questions? Write me at meeshbop@yahoo.com. Thank you for your continued support of LIVE swing music for swing dancers in San Diego. See you Sunday! |

| SwingOrama News - Events, Workshops, Music More: Carl SONNY Leyland Trio plays the Aubergine this Sunday, Sept. 21st By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 - 08:41 am: |
Sonny's back, and this time he's heading up his own trio and playing only the songs he loves to play. Born in the south of England in 1965, Carl Sonny Leyland started playing piano at the age of 15, after hearing a recording by Tommy Dorsey's band of "TD's Boogie Woogie". Carl taught himself to play the number on piano and from that time began to dig deeper into the boogie woogie. Considered an authority, he has lectured on the history of Blues and Boogie Woogie piano, being one of the few pianists able to recreate the obscure and primitive styles present in the genre. He has assimilated the unique black sound of the giants of Boogie Woogie: Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson and particularly Jimmy Yancey, into his own piano style. We are lucky to have him back at the Aubergine this Sunday with all-stars Hal Smith (drums) and Marty Eggers (bass) backing him up. This very same trio played to a packed house of Lindy Hoppers at the Broadway Studios in San Francisco last June, where they recorded a soon-to-be-released LIVE CD. To hear some excerpts from their upcoming CD, see: http://www.cafesavoy.com/sonnyleylandtrio.html To get more info on this Sunday's event, see: http://www.cafesavoy.com/aubergine.html $8 Cover. 18-and-up are welcome. |

| SwingOrama News - Events, Workshops, Music More: Carl SONNY Leyland Trio plays the Aubergine this Sunday, Sept. 21st By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Monday, September 22, 2003 - 01:44 am: |
Sometimes, the best musical moments happen when you least expect them. I'm really sad that a lot of dancers left early in the last set last night, because they missed out on an impromptu musical treat when Blues Harp phenom, Little George Sueref, sat in with the Sonny Leyland Trio. Based in London, Little George is in the middle of his U.S. tour right now, playing Blues and Roots Festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was in SD playing a gig at Sea World on Sunday when he decided to stop by the Aubergine to check out Sonny's band (he and Sonny had recorded a few albums, way back when there were albums). At the end of Sonny's last set, Little George sang and played some hot blues tunes with the band, then ripped it up on the Sonny classic "Drinking Wine Spo-dee-oh-dee." It was one of those rare musical moments when two of Britain's top Blues players jammed spontaneously for a small but appreciative audience. I felt privileged to have been there. Anyway, if you missed seeing Little George perform last night, go to the Adams Avenue Street Fair this Saturday. His band plays from 6:15-7:15pm. To find out more info Little George, visit his website: http://www.littlegeorge.co.uk |

We are proud to present the DEBUT of San Diego's latest swing sensations, THE FLAT FIVE QUARTET! I know many of you expected to see the Fremonts at the Aubergine this Sunday, but unfortunately their drummer couldn't make it, so they have been re-scheduled to play next Sunday, Oct. 19th. In the meantime, we are happy to DEBUT San Diego's latest swing sensations, The Flat Five Quartet, for your listening and dancing pleasure. Led by singer William Davids, better known as "Big Willie," The Flat Five Quartet is a new SD band that is the "talk of the town" among local jazz musicians. They've been "bustin' their chops" at local bars and restaurants for the past 2 months, and look forward to the opportunity to play for a room full of dancers this Sunday, Oct. 12th at the Aubergine. | SwingOrama News - Events, Workshops, Music More: Stompy Jones a.k.a. Swing Session to play at the Aubergine on Sun. Dec. 14th? By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Tuesday, October 21, 2003 - 01:36 pm: |
Hey, I just wanted to get some feedback before we book the band for real. Tanoa from SF has been corresponding with me to try and get Stompy Jones (the artists formerly known as Swing Session) to play at the Aubergine on Sunday, Dec. 14th. This would mark the first time this band has played in San Diego EVER! Of course, they are going to cost a bundle of money, so we want your feedback before booking the band. 1) Do you really want them to play at the Aubergine on Sunday, Dec. 14th? and... 2) Would you be willing to pay $20 at-the-door (or $15 in-advance) for the privilege of having them play in San Diego for the holiday swing event of the year? Give us some feedback NOW, so we know whether to book the band or not! ***** About the band (from their website)... NEWS! In October of 2003, The Swing Session changed their name to Stompy Jones. The same six fellas, the same jumpin' jazz and swingin' blues, but a new name to go along with the 3rd studio album to be released on October 18th, 2003. The new self-titled album, "Stompy Jones", as well as the past albums, "The Swing Session" and "Whispering Grass" are available for sale and MP3 sample listening at the new site, www.stompyjones.com. This San Francisco sextet is renowned for their jumpin' rhythm, wailing improvisations, and relentless energy. They've been driving up the cultural temperature in California with their hip charm, retro style, and explosive stage show. These coast to coast journeymen of jump have been playing boogie-woogie, vintage jazz and blues to crowds of all-ages. From the Lincoln Center in NYC, the Half Note Jazz Club in Athens, Greece, the Santa Monica Pier, Eureka’s Concert on the Pier, to the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and holding down every Tuesday night at the Broadway Studios in San Francisco for the past 4 years. With their vintage attire and romping small-band swing, these fellas have injected a healthy dose of "Central Avenue" inspired Rhythm & Blues into the current roots music scene. Little David's thumpin' stand-up bass, Bowen Brown's swinging double-shuffle drumming and the rolling boogie-woogie piano of Scott Lawrence provide the foundation. Riffing on top is Tim Hyland on trumpet and Jeff "Erv" Ervin on tenor and alto saxophone. Together these two highly respected "take-off men" create the fireworks of vintage jazz. At center stage, the "swing man" rejoicing and shouting the blues is the irrepressible Peter "Pops" Walsh! Whether they're appearing at a posh supper club, concert hall, or a little place "just down the road apiece" these fellas deliver high-fidelity, high flying, eight-to-the-bar romance with every performance. Stompy Jones delivers the romping, joyous style of jazz that would come to be known as Rock and Roll. |

| SwingOrama News - Events, Workshops, Music More: Guitar Legend Bill Magee plays at the Aubergine this Sun. Nov. 16th! By Meeshi (Meeshi) on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 - 02:12 am: |
Legendary blues guitarist Bill Magee makes his Aubergine debut this Sunday, Nov. 16th. Bill Magee has played with the likes of B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Otis Redding, John Lee Hooker, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, Wilson Pickett, and Bo Diddley. We are so fortunate to have such a NATIONAL MUSICAL TREASURE both living and playing locally. Come on out and support LIVE music and LIVING musical legends this and every Sunday at San Diego's Sunday night swing venue, Stompin' at the Aubergine. Bill and his band play from 8:30-11:30pm. $8 Cover (includes the FREE swing dance lesson at 7:45pm). For more info, visit http://www.cafesavoy.com. ***** Here's an excerpt from his bio, where Bill Magee has a guitar duel with the late, great Jimi Hendrix...Enjoy! "Moving to the Big Apple, he rented a flat in Harlem directly across from the Apollo Theater and dreamed of having his name on the marquee. Before long he was working seven nights a week and he decided to check out the King Curtis Band at the Small Paradise Club. Asking to sit in, he played three songs when the regular guitarist joined in. The air was electric as the guitarists traded off solos and riffs. After the final set the guitarist introduced himself as Jimmy James(Hendrix). That summer of '63, Jimmy James introduced Willie to the music scene and they formed the band Jimmy James and the Flames. Willie eventually put together his own band, The Kansas City Playboys. Several years were spent on the road opening for the James Brown Revue which included the Apollo Theater. Thus, his childhood dream of playing at the Apollo was finally realized!!! In 1967, Jimmy James(Hendrix) left for England and Willie toured Russia, Japan, Europe and England with his band. Professional play kept him touring on the Chittlin' Circuit and on the New York scene when he was home. It was during this time Bill Magee played with B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Otis Redding, John Lee Hooker, Bobby 'Blue' Bland, Wilson Pickett, and Bo Diddley among others in venues like The Regal and McCormick Place in Chicago, The Royal in D.C., Madison Square Garden, The Filmore East, The Baby Grand as well as Yankee and Shea Stadium in New York City. With the birth of his fourth child, Willie finally gave up the relentless touring and the music business for a 9 to 5 and fatherhood.
