It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Willie Desatoff passed away on Saturday, October 1st at the age of 82.

He inspired us greatly as well as thousands the world over.

We were very glad we had the chance to bring him to San Diego so that many of you could meet him and share in his joy of the Balboa.

His legend lives on in all of us continuing to teach and dance the Balboa with "finesse, finesse, finesse"

Swing-to-Funk-Music Workshop this Sunday @ Kava Lounge
Author: Meeshi :: Posted: Wed Sep 28, 2005 12:46 pm GMT

"Jazz is the teacher, Funk is the preacher." -- James "Blood" Ulmer (left)

Melissa and I are excited to bring to you our first-ever SWING-TO-FUNK-MUSIC workshop this Sun. Oct. 2nd at the Kava Lounge. Why swing dance to funk music? Because funk music is fun and expressive, and it is the direct descendant of jazz/blues music in America. In fact, funk music combines aspects of a wide range of black musical traditions: the blues, R&B, soul, progressive jazz, African percussion, and psychedelic rock. So if we can swing dance to the blues, we can swing dance to da funk.

Our 90-min. workshop (7:00-8:30p) will be an introduction to how to adapt your swing dancing to better fit funk music. The cost: only $10 (includes admission to the Kava dance). Here are some of the topics we'll address:

1) How funk music is structured similarly (polyrhythmic...

Hurricance Katrina relief show this Friday at Tio Leo's
Author: Big Mickey :: Posted: Wed Sep 21, 2005 6:47 pm GMT
For those that don't know there is a group of local musicians working on a compilation CD to help raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Recording is underway and the CD will be released soon I am very proud to say that this group is being spearheaded by Jump Jones bass player Johnny G. d'Artenay. The proceeds from this CD will go to helping the victims of the Hurricane. The bands playing this show will be donating their time, as well as their music, for this effort. So far I know that we will play as well as The Freemonts. Your cover charge will help with the cost of completing this CD so that we can get it out there and start raising money. So please come on down and help out. The music starts at 9:00pm with multiple bands. Please join us for this fun and giving evening.

No Firehouse dance Thurs. Sept. 22nd & 29th!
Author: Meeshi :: Posted: Tue Sep 20, 2005 4:10 am GMT
Just a final reminder that the Firehouse main room is booked for the last two Thursdays of September (Sept. 22nd & 29th) for a play by the San Diego Junior Theatre.

But swing students, not to worry, our weekly swing classes will still be held this Thursday the 22nd & next Thursday the 29th in the upstairs dance studio of the Firehouse (7-8p: Int. Lindy, 8-9p: Beg. Lindy) followed by a FREE open practice session for students from 9-10p.

We will resume our regular Firehouse schedule on Thurs. Oct. 6th. Please make a note of these changes.
