Swing School Update: We've just added February's Swing School Schedule to the top of the thread. Note that next month, we will be teaching Frankie Manning's Shim Sham along with Ryan Francois' Jitterbug Stroll for our next installment in the Firehouse Swing Classics series -- Swing Line Dances 101. The Shim Sham and the Jitterbug Stroll are two of the most popular line dances performed in Lindy venues all around the world and we welcome dancers of all levels to join us.

Now, as a beginning Lindy student, you may be asking yourself:

1) Why do I need to learn a LINE DANCE? Isn't swing a partner dance?

Yes, swing is an improvised partnered dance that incorporates a lot of traditional African-American jazz steps. The Shim Sham and the Jitterbug Stroll are a great way to get introduced to some of these essential early jazz steps. For example, the Shim Sham will introduce you to the Shim Sham Shimmy, Push Crossovers, the Tacky Annie, Half-Break and Full-Break Steps, Boogie Back, Boogie Forward and Shorty George. The Jitterbug Stroll covers a lot of the same jazz steps and also includes new steps like Shuffles, Pivot Step, Knee Slaps, and the Suzie Q. All these steps are mandatory vocabulary in any swing dancer's footwork repetoire.

2) Do I have to learn the Shim Sham and Jitterbug Stroll when I really want to learn something more complex like the Big Apple or the Trankey Doo?

The Big Apple and the Trankey Doo are also part of our Firehouse Swing Class Series, but we teachers have all agreed that it's important to get your Jazz Movement basics down first before trying something more complex. The Shim Sham and the Jitterbug Stroll teach you most of the basics of Swing/Jazz Movement. If you master these two simpler line dances, you can pick up any swing/jazz line dance.

Reminder: The Shim Sham and the Jitterbug Stroll are open to dancers of all levels. No partner dance experience is required as there is no partner dancing. But, be assured, every move you'll learn in these classes can easily be incorporated into your Lindy dancing.

If you have any questions about February's Classes, don't hesitate to email me at firehousesd@yahoo.com. Thank you for your time.

SWING SCHOOL UPDATE: Hey swing dancers, just a quick reminder that our next Firehouse Swing School Session starts next Wed. Feb. 4. This month, we've got classes in beginning Lindy, beginning Balboa and Jazz Movement (Shim Sham/Jitterbug Stroll). Now I know some of you may have already taken Lindy 1 or Balboa 1 with us before or with other swing teachers in town. We, Firehouse teachers, strongly feel that it's important that you take Lindy 1 or Balboa 1 at least 3 times to get a very strong foundation in your basics.

The first time through you might feel overwhelmed as you're processing a lot of new information. The second time through you're more comfortable reviewing the keypoints and integrating new teacher tips you missed the first time around. The third time through you're confident and competent in your basics, able to improvise and lead/follow all of the steps without thinking about them too much.

Remember, it's one thing to mentally "know" the right steps, and it's another to execute them automatically from muscle memory. Dancing is starts to get really fun when it's done mostly from muscle memory, and that just takes time and reviewing your basics over and over again. FYI, we plan to open our first Lindy 2 class very soon (March or April), until then, please join us at the Firehouse Swing School to hone your Bal and Lindy basics in February. You'll be glad you did!

From all of us at the Firehouse Swing School --

Alison, Giselle, Jasmine, Joel, Meeshi, Nate, Tertia & Tremaine

I hope to see some people out there doing those fantastic moves you learned in class! In order to really get into partner dancing, you have to feel comfortable with your own movement which is why learning line dances is SOOOOO important.

If you see old footage, all the Whitey's Lindy Hoppers were always doing line dances in groups or with partners because they integrated individual moves into their own social dancing.

This especially becomes important when you want to take your dancing to the next level by improvising. Improving is based on YOUR OWN vocabulary, including everything you soak in from class, your partner, the world, and then some Smile

Oh yes!
The JAZZ material is really what makes Lindy so unique and interesting - when you SWINGOUT your partner - anything goes...

That 'anything' you will find relates all the time to the classic jazz steps you will learn this month.

Also, I really have to reinforce the advice to take a beginner class AT LEAST three times:
1st time = clueless
(if you had a clue you are a better dancer than I was when I started)
2nd time = body starts to move comfortably & confidently
(this is the key to starting to understand connection after the steps take hold)
3rd time = you actually hear what the teacher is talking about
(this is a big one for me of course since I'm the teacher Laughing )

For those of you wanting more INT/ADV material, the JAVA JIVE will start on FEB 12 - www.2PlySwing.com

We plan on teaching INT/ADV moves and will expect your basics to be solid!!!!!

See you this month at the FIREHOUSE.

Joel

Thanks for the good turnout last Wednesday, and especially to those taking Lindy 1 and Bal 1 again. We, teachers, salute you! Anyway, with the size of our venue, there is still PLENTY of room in all of our classes, so please feel free to drop-in this Wednesday even if you missed class last week.

We'd love to see you at the Firehouse Swing School!

FIREHOUSE CLASS UPDATE: SWING SAMPLER WORKSHOP THIS WED. JULY 8TH!

SMOOTH LINDY-TO-BAL TRANSITIONS with Joe and Elizabeth

What makes Swing Dancing so fun and often so challenging is integrating the various swing styles together (Lindy, Balboa, Charleston, etc.). For the opening workshop in our July Swing Sampler Series, Joe and Elizabeth are going to show you some fun and easy ways to smoothly connect your Lindy and Balboa Basics. Pre-requisites: Must be familiar with a Lindy Swingout, Bal Basic and Come Around. $15/adults, $10/students (includes FREE admission to the Firehouse Dance).

ABOUT JOE & ELIZABETH: Joe & Elizabeth have been teaching Lindy Hop together at UCSD for 2 years now, and have recently won the International Amateur Balboa competition at the 2009 Balboa Rendezvous. They find the most joy in seeing new dancers integrate themselves into the San Diego swing community and learning to love swing dancing as much as they do.
