About the Pete Jacobs Quintet:
After WWII, the big-bands of the thirties and forties were struggling to stay afloat. Many of the lead-singers that had performed with these bands struck-out on their own. Thus began the era of the smaller jazz combo with a couple of horns, and featuring a great lead singer. Rock and Roll had not yet appeared on the scene, but the crowds still wanted music they could dance to, and the 'bebop' style of jazz did not lend itself to that very well. Singers like Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra were making a powerful mark with this music.
The Pete Jacobs Quintet tries to capture the great music of this era. This music is perfect for swing dancing, since dancing is what it's all about! Few bandleaders understand - and can deliver - what dancers want better than Jacobs, "My wife and I have spent a lot of time learning as much as we could about swing dancing. I have a real appreciation for what dancers want, because we go out dancing ourselves several times a week. We are avid Lindy-hoppers! I put our set together with the dancers in mind. It doesn't matter how great the musicianship of the band is if you can't dance to it." And the people who flock to every swing music venue they can find overwhelmingly agree!
Dancer Reviews from their last San Diego gig in Feb. 2008:
Jeff Eldridge: OK, I just got home from Jumptown and have to say that the Pete Jacobs Swingtet was one of the best band I have heard, not only at Martini Ranch, but like one of the best small ensembles...EVER. The female vocalist was fantastic, Pete did some great work as well, especially on the Louis Prima stuff, and the band (Sax, Trumpet, Bass, Drums and Keys) were really tight and played up for the dancers.
Bonnie Horvitz: Oh.my.god. Last night was the BEST! The band was AWESOME! The energy was INCREDIBLE!
Jackie O'Eldridge: What a night!! Last night was the most fun I have had dancing in SOOOOOO long!! That band is just amazing - every time they started to play a new song it was so good I found myself desperately looking to find someone to dance with - the band was so smooth and the vocalist was on fiyah!! I would LOVE for Pete Jacobs to be the house band for Jumptown...wow...just amazing.
